The celebration is also referred to as Juneteenth Independence Day and/or Emancipation Day, Jubilee Day, Freedom Day. Juneteenth was originally celebrated in Texas (June 19, 1986) and marked the first anniversary of the day that African Americans in Texas first learned of the Emancipation Proclamation. which was than two years after it was initially issued. For real. President Biden signed the holiday into federal law on June 17, 2021. Sadly, most companies have not yet provided it to their employees as a paid day off.
We donated our new ZILDOME FSC-100%, Yulex natural rubber yoga mat. The most sustainable yoga mat available. They are so good folks. We also donated 2 (yes two!) Patagonia FSC-100% YULEX wetsuits. We make better possible - better for the environment and the people. Check out the winners. The wetsuits went to a surf coach and his surf mentee.
Join us next year - 2023. Risa, Founder of Paddle for Peace, says it is going to be epic and we believe her. ZILDOME and YULEX will again be sponsors.
]]>Thank you also to Encinitas for Equality (E4E) for hosting the event at their headquarters behind the Multicultural Collective & Community Center at 1900 North Coast Highway 101, Encinitas. It is operated by E4E as a subsidized co-op for BIPOC-owned businesses; and also used for outdoor community gatherings. A place for us to come together safely, educate ourselves and mobilize into action.
]]>We raffled off 2 yoga mats and a gift from a Hillcrest favorite breakfast and brunch spot, Breakfast Bitch, a minority owned restaurant owned by an African American male and a female business owner. After our yoga under the oaks, there were the donuts. This time from Nomads Donuts, an award-winning, Black-owned business in North Park serving an ever-changing menu list of unique donuts. It’s a San Diego staple and foodie favorite. A few of us might have had more than one.
The MLK Recreation Center plays an important role in this Southeast San Diego community. It is well maintained and clean. It is accessible by public transit San Diego MTS Route 11. It offers various community resources including a large indoor basketball court, two indoor racquetball courts, craft room, meeting room, large kitchen, one baseball field, one soccer field, two outdoor basketball courts, eight outdoor tennis courts, picnic areas, two tot lots and a swimming pool. Facility and field rentals are also available.]]>]]>
What we’ve learned from being sheltered during the ongoing pandemic is that we need human connection more than ever, especially addressing our own and relationship with race and social connections. Loneliness (and bias) occurs when we lack true genuine human connection to other people, other races, other age groups, other cultures. These community yoga sessions help us, at our core, explore our humanity. Please join us each Sunday in August this summer to reunite with old friends and meet new ones. And of course there is always donuts!
Special thank you to the Urban Collective Project, a community effort consisting of a series of action teams that are identifying major disparities within our communities and providing space to connect and renew. The Collective creates action plans research and solutions designed to address our disparities focusing on health, education, art and infrastructure. We flowed in an urban garden space with a vibrant mural created by a local artists to commemorate the Lincoln Park area, its musicians and artists and those born and raised here.
]]>In August we joined forces with Black Lives Yoga (@blacklivesyoga) and hosted 2 Sunday community yoga classes led by Teal (@serenitysounwaves) in Lincoln Park at The Community Gathering Place. All yoga donations went to Black Lives Yoga. Teal is also a musician with her unique conscious rap sounds. You can find her online @tealideal and her events at @canikickitsandiego.

It was fantastic to be enjoying the beautiful park and outdoors in one of San Diego’s iconic beaches. Where during the late summer leopard sharks swim in shallow waters in front of the Marine Room restaurant and surfers and paddle boarders line up all the way past Scripps Pier. There was also a beach cleanup and delicious vegetarian BBQ for all. No plastic was harmed during the BBQ.
The inaugural Jubilee Celebration was organized and sponsored by San Diego’s own Risa of Paddle for Peace, in collaboration with Black Surfers and San Diego Surfrider Foundation. Together they matched surf coaches and students for free surf lessons. Participating was the amazing professional longboard surfer from Hawaii, Nique Miller. It was hard to say who got more out of the surf lessons – the volunteer coaches or the students – both smiles were so huge.
See you on our yoga mats next year!

ZILDOME held our first community yoga event with our FSC100% certified Yulex natural rubber yoga mats on the rooftop of a building right in the heart of the Fashion District in downtown Los Angeles. Yes you heard that right. We were on the rooftop – and it was perfect.
Most folks don’t know that the Fashion District is like some 90-blocks and crowded with pre-war commercial buildings, many of which have been repurposed as art and photography studios, blank walls and large spaces to host events, and home to more than 5,000 companies employing about 50,000 people. If you have never been – it’s a must.
Our flow yoga sessions were led by the one and only Osiris Booque and Jelani Estelle. The lovely Jelani is born and raised in LA. She’s a creative, an actress and screenwriter Learn more about both Osiris and Jelani under our Collab page.
